New SEC Rule Marks Big Change in Investment Advisory Relations

When seeking investment advice, most investors call a trusted financial adviser or stockbroker. If this happens to be the same person, investors should pay special attention to one of the biggest investment advisory decisions from the Securities and Exchange Commission in nearly 35 years.

Since Jan. 31, all United States brokerage firms that offer fee-based financial services have been required to clearly disclose whether an account is a brokerage account or an advisory account.

What are some important considerations in evaluating an executive job offer?

It's easy to compare two jobs, based on salary.

But benefits such as stock options, insurance, retirement plans, vacation and other perks all affect a job offer's value. With benefits packages growing more elaborate, these attributes are not easy to compare from one package to the next.

SURVEY: As the baby boomer generation nears retirement, what are the best options for investments, and what role should the stock markets play?

Continue a life-long program -- Drew Kanaly, Vice Chairman, Kanaly Trust Co.

Financial comfort is personal. It is not accidental. It is built, over time, through savings and compounding, and it requires a sense of future. Each person travels the path to retirement at a different pace. The beginning of a new year is a good time for any person to refocus on his financial future. The stock markets should play a role in most retirement plans. Stock investing, however, should be carefully planned in context with concentrations in other assets, company benefits and allocation of existing retirement savings.

Range Rovers - Buying a Ranch is a Labor of Love, Often with the Emphasis on Labor

Owning a ranch is a goal that beguiles many of us seeking beautiful surroundings that encourage strong values such as the importance of hard work, individualism and conservancy. But these properties are not for dilettantes: Before purchasing a ranch, we need to weigh whether the benefits we expect will outweigh the large investments in capital, time and effort that ranching requires.

Consider full range of ramifications when appointing fiduciaries

Serving as a fiduciary is truly an awesome responsibility that one should neither accept nor bestow lightly.

People often appoint fiduciaries and accept fiduciary roles - as executors, trustees, guardians of minors and corporate board directors - without carefully considering all the personal, financial, legal, and emotional ramifications of their choices. There are even cases in which fiduciaries have been named without being informed of their appointment, leaving them with potentially no moral obligation to serve.

Jeff Kanaly has been named Volunteer Honoree for the 2008 Northwest Harris County Heart Ball, and the American Heart Association has chosen to honor the philanthropic legacy of E. Deane Kanaly by establishing a grant in his name. The Kanaly family’s support of the American Heart Association began with Deane Kanaly, who passed away in July of 2006. He encouraged his friends and associates to give, and during his long tenure as a financial planner advised his clients to donate many millions, he continued. Deane Kanaly created Kanaly Trust in 1975 with the hope of changing the way people take care of their financial affairs. Deane saw many successful people make a very good living.
