E. Deane Kanaly Named Houston's Entrepreneur of the Year in Financial Services

E. Deane Kanaly, Founder and Chairman of Kanaly Trust Company, was recently named Houston’s 2002 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year in Financial Services. The award was presented to one professional in each of 10 business categories. Winners from each area were announced at an awards banquet held on June 20.

Mr. Kanaly was chosen as a finalist due to the groundbreaking achievements and insightful leadership he has demonstrated throughout his professional life. Mr. Kanaly began his career collecting banking and business data trends for statistical research at the University of Oklahoma. Soon he became a respected expert for industry and government authorities. From here, his career in financial services grew. Mr. Kanaly served as Trust Division Manager, Executive Trust Officer, and finally Vice President at Bank of Southwest. After leaving Bank of Southwest, he served as CEO and Vice-Chairman at River Oaks Bank and Trust Company. Through all of his experience, Mr. Kanaly saw the need for creating comprehensive, objective, fee-only financial programs that would be free from conflicts of interest and live through the lives and generations of families. He then followed his calling to create these services by founding The Kanaly Company.

At its inception, The Kanaly Company was surely one of the first of its kind. Kanaly Trust Company was founded in 1976 with three employees, one million dollars, and an advisory board made up of eight business leaders, it was considered to be America’s first independent trust organization. With this venture, Mr. Kanaly pioneered not only the independent trust company, but fee-only financial planning. Initially, the company met with opposition. In contrast, due to the success this firm has experienced over the past 27 years, nearly 100 new independent trust companies have replicated the model nationwide.

Mr. Kanaly has executed a high level of commitment and great contributions to community, educational, and charitable organizations throughout his life. He founded the Foundation for Financial Literacy. He has served as a distinguished faculty member for many respected educational institutions such as The University of Houston, Southern Methodist University, Texas Tech, The American Institute of Banking, the American Savings & Loan Institute, and the Women’s Institute of Houston. Mr. Kanaly has provided exceptional leadership to many professional organizations such as the Texas Banker’s Association, the American Bankers Association, and charitable causes such as Kid Care.

As a regional award winner, Mr. Kanaly is now eligible for the National Entrepreneur of the Year Award in his respective category. From the regional honorees, the overall national winners will be chosen. The national finalists and winners will be announced at a November conference in Palm Springs, California.
